Sen. Harry Reid's Negotiating Skills (Cartoon)

...and  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday that Democrats won't approve more money for the Iraq war this year unless President Bush agrees to begin bringing troops home.

By the end of the week, the House and Senate planned to vote on a $50 billion measure for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill would require Bush to initiate troop withdrawals immediately with the goal of ending combat by December 2008.

Prove me wrong, Senator.

•  The only thing to do is laugh.

  This time last year, I was completely psyched about our great electoral triumph.  I would go into work each day talking about how finally, some sanity would be restored to government.  I'd talk about the Constitution might be honored again, how the Democrats could use their slim majority to halt all tricks and even pull an impeachment, since it's really the only solution to our problems right now anyway, and soon they'd all realize that.

  My co-workers would look at me like I was on crack.  Not because I was wrong about what needed to happen, but because I believed the Democrats weren't "In on it" too.  We fell into being a sick, fascist empire long ago, killing millions all over the world and spreading misery, and if that hadn't happened we might  have collectively given enough of a shit about our rights to stop Bush before he started (you know, when he stole the throne).

  The Democrats have all the constitutional power they need to put an end to the madness we're in, step by step.  But they lack the resolve.  If they had even a fraction of integrity, they'd figure out how to  persuade the idiot Republicans in Congress to do whatever they wanted.  I mean, they're idiots.  They're dumber than their voters, in most cases.  Did you read the testimony from the Brent Wilkes case?  The Congressmen he was bribing were less intelligent than a pile of dirty diapers.  I refuse to believe they can't be bargained with or brow-beaten by even more slightly more highly evolved Democrats.

  No, they're in on it.  They're either being secretly tailed, blackmailed, and intimidated by Blackwater's private intelligence outfit, or they're bought out, or they're also pretty dumb, or maybe they're keeping the disaster going as long as they can, thinking it'll result in more votes for  them.  (As if acting like this is restoring anyone's faith in the possibility of good governance.)  Or else there never would have been votes held on war funding after Bush vetoed the first one he didn't like.  I call bullshit, and until I see a change worth celebrating, I'll just laugh my ass off to myself about the spineless doormats I voted for.

      Keep at it. Thought the word-count wasn't enough to justify a diary, to be honest, so that's why I didn't recommend the diary. I was going to say "put up 3 or 4 cartoons and you'll have a diary" but that would have been pointless, I see.

  .. although I can't help but wonder if the reality is less that Reid, Pelosi, et al aren't dismal in achieving their goals, but in fact, quite successful; we simply misunderstand what they strive for.
